Un artista americano de tatuajes viaja por el mundo explorando y explotando temas étnicos en sus diseños. En una exposición de tatuajes en Singapur, entra en contacto por primera vez con el mundo exótico del tatuaje tradicional de Samoa. Su deseo de aprender la técnica antigua de dicha cultura, le hará arriesgar la vida en un viaje místico por la isla.
